Am I a good candidate for a mommy makeover in San Antonio?

Good candidates for this procedure are:

  • At their ideal body weight and have been stable at that weight.
  • You should no longer be breastfeeding because it will change the size and shape of the breasts.
  • You should also be generally healthy and a non-smoker.
  • No longer planning any additional pregnancies.

How is a mommy makeover performed?

The procedure is performed under general anesthesia in an accredited surgical center or a hospital.

  • Abdominoplasty: the abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) is begun by making an incision on the lower part of your abdomen and around your belly button. The area between the abdominal muscles is then sutured together. The extra skin of the belly is removed, and the belly button is placed higher on the abdomen.
  • Breast Augmentation: If you are receiving breast augmentation surgery, it will be performed by placing an implant through an incision under the breast. If a breast lift or breast reduction is needed, a vertical or anchor incision is used to reshape the breast tissue and skin.

All the incisions are closed with absorbable sutures slowly broken down by the body. This means that no sutures will need to be removed later. You may or may not have drains after your procedure. You will be placed in a supportive bra and abdominal compression garment. You will be measured for these garments before your surgery.

What is the recovery like from a mommy makeover?

Immediate Recovery: Patients typically wake up in a recovery room with bandages and compression garments after surgery.

Pain & Discomfort: Expect to feel pain, swelling, and discomfort in the initial days following surgery. Most surgeons will prescribe pain medication to help manage this.

Mobility: Movement might be limited for the first few days. Taking short walks within the home is often recommended to promote blood circulation and reduce the risk of blood clots.

Activity Restrictions: Patients should avoid heavy lifting, strenuous activities, and certain movements to ensure the surgical sites heal properly. This might mean no lifting of heavy objects or even small children for a set period.

Healing & Bruising: Bruising and swelling are normal and can take several weeks to subside. The full results of the makeover might not be visible until swelling has fully gone down, which can take a few months.

Follow-up Appointments: Regular check-ins with the surgeon will be necessary to monitor healing, remove stitches or drainage tubes, and address any concerns.

How many surgeries does a mommy makeover include?

A mommy makeover typically includes multiple procedures combined into one surgery. Common procedures in a mommy makeover can include a tummy tuck, breast augmentation, breast lift, liposuction, and sometimes other body contouring. By consolidating these procedures into a single surgery, patients can reduce their overall recovery time. Two board-certified plastic surgeons often perform the surgery together to ensure safety and efficiency, avoiding the need for overnight stays or extended care.

Where will my surgery take place?

The procedure may take place at an accredited ambulatory surgical center, or at a hospital on an outpatient basis. The choice of location is based on many factors including your safety and quality of care.

Will I stay overnight after my procedure?

After a mommy makeover, most patients can go home the same day. If we are doing an excision of a large amount of skin or additional procedures, you may need to stay overnight in the hospital or surgical center.

How do I know which surgery is right for me?

When you consult with our board-certified plastic surgeon, they will go over all your options and provide you with their professional recommendations. In general, a mommy makeover is a good option if you meet the following criteria:

  • You are at your ideal weight
  • You have completed breastfeeding
  • You do not plan on any additional pregnancies
  • You have been at a stable weight for at least six months.
  • Additionally, it is important that you be nicotine free prior to surgery, as nicotine can cause severe complications such as death of the abdominal skin and wound dehiscence (breaking apart).

Additionally:

  • If you have any bleeding or clotting problems, it is important that you tell us so we can work with your hematologist to determine if this is a safe operation for you.
  • If you have significant medical problems, we will work with your physicians to determine if you can safely undergo surgery.

Will insurance cover my mommy makeover?

A mommy makeover is a cosmetic procedure and is not covered by insurance.

When can I return to normal activities?

You can generally return to normal activities after 6 weeks. If you had an abdominal plication (muscle tightening) performed, you may want to limit your abdominal core workouts until 3 months after your surgery. When resuming activities, it is recommended that you start slow and wear an abdominal binder. Then you can slowly increase your activity level.

What are the limitations, risks, and complications of a mommy makeover?

The risks of the procedure are the same as those associated with breast surgeries and abdominoplasties. These include:

  • Anesthesia risks
  • Pain
  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Fluid accumulation (seroma)
  • Poor wound healing
  • Numbness or changes in sensation to the skin or nipple
  • Scars
  • Looseness of the skin
  • Contour or shape irregularities
  • Asymmetry
