Neuromodulators such as BOTOX® and other brands work by weakening specifically targeted facial muscles, preventing the action of neurotransmitters on the muscle. The active ingredient in BOTOX prevents or limits the muscle from constant contractions, which eventually etches wrinkles and creases into the overlying skin. Neuromodulators create a temporary smoothing effect, typically lasting from three to five months. It takes three to five days to enjoy the full effect of your injections.
As we age, loss of collagen, elastin, and the soft tissues in your face leads to skin sagging, wrinkling, and overall volume loss, as well as a hollowed, gaunt, or tired look. Soft tissue fillers are also known as dermal fillers. The main goal of fillers is to restore lost volume and smooth facial wrinkles. Most dermal fillers are made with a main ingredient called hyaluronic acid, or HA, which occurs naturally in the body. HA bonds to water in the skin to provide hydration and volume. As we age, the soft tissues of the face atrophy (thinning, diminishing), which contributes to the hollowed facial look associated with aging. When hyaluronic acid is injected into the soft tissue of the face or hands, volume is restored, leaving you with a very fresh, revitalized, youthful look that is distinctly you – not overdone.
There are different options in the Juvéderm® and Restylane® filler lines, all of which are made from hyaluronic acid. These dermal fillers can be used to treat wrinkles around the mouth, vertical lines above the upper lip (perioral), hollowed cheeks and temples, thinning lips, and deep folds and lines near your nose and mouth (nasolabial folds and marionette lines). The Restylane line can also rejuvenate the look of aging hands, plumping them to look fresh, smooth, and youthful. Ask Dr. Farber or Dr. Shah which of these will work best for you.
Teoxane RHA® is the newest dermal filler in the United States and the first and only FDA-approved hyaluronic acid filler that is indicated for treating dynamic (caused by facial motions) facial wrinkles and lines. Teoxane RHA® addresses the signs of aging we see in the face, such as wrinkles, volume loss, and loss of definition. It is used to provide volume and smooth the wrinkles created by constant facial motions. It is designed to be resilient and flexible enough to adapt to your facial movements. Fewer chemical modifications are made during manufacturing, which helps preserve the natural structure of the hyaluronic acid, allowing it to more closely mimic the natural HA found in your skin. A designer filler, RHA injections create a very natural-looking and feeling filler that moves with you.

Depending on how many areas you want treated (injected), it can take anywhere from 10-30 minutes.
To minimize bruising, avoid aspirin, ibuprofen or similar products as well as fish oil, Vitamin E, and ginkgo biloba for two weeks prior to your treatment.
Most fillers last up to a year, however some can last longer than that. The duration depends on what filler is used, and how fast your body metabolizes it (which can be different person to person).
Depending on your goals and the areas of the face to be treated, the number of syringes needed, and the cost will vary. During your initial consultation, Dr. Farber or Dr. Shah will provide you with the best treatment plan that is customized to you to provide you with the natural looking results that you desire.
After the injection, ice packs can be placed over the areas to reduce swelling and bruising for 10 minutes on, 10 minutes off 2-3 times a day as needed for swelling for the first 1-2 days. You should not massage the face and should avoid compression (including headbands and hats) to the areas injected. You also should not lie down and avoid strenuous activities which increase heart rate or blood pressure for a few hours after injection to decrease chances of bruising.
